Posted by: @bobtskutterI'm about to start my ASHP journey by using one to heat my garage/workshop space
Beware that each house (defined by a Meter Point Reference Number) is only permitted one application for the £7500 grant, known as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
If that's used for your outbuildings, then it can't be later used for the rest of the house.
Consider also that the house is likely to require a heat-pump system capable of heating Domestic Hot Water (DHW), whereas your garage installation could make do without that.
These are the sort of discussion points which warrant you starting your own topic as @editor suggested.
You will receive responses from others here, offering a number of options to address this issue.

Mars hello there. I plan to go air to water and then into a home made HVAC air filtration "thing". I'm not really sure how it's all going to go together, but it will be fun to work through it.

Bob

@ivanhoew you're very welcome here...
... especially as you seem to know one end of a spanner from the other.
Yes, please do post about your ASHP aspirations...
... and if you'd like to tackle some of your energy requirements on a DIY basis, then this is definitely the right forum for you 🤗

Thank you Transparent ...much appreciated 😊
I have popped my burning questions of nonsense on the asph forum as we speak !

Hi all,
Happy to be here having watched the youtube vids for a while. Currently in the process of renovating and then extending our (hopefully) forever home in Cambridge and have been researching what to do heating/plumbing wise. We were originally considering a GSHP with bore holes to remove the need for an ASHP being visible in the garden, however the costs are overly prohibitive so we've now accepted finding a space for an ASHP unit!
We are hoping to do a lot of work for eveything ourselves, although will be looking for an installer for the heatpump and are hoping to find the answer to lots of our questions by trawling the forum! Look forward to engaging with you!

Hi @tuppers - you're very welcome here.
Glad to hear you're wanting to do a lot of renovation work yourselves. 🙂
Don't be constrained by the forum title suggesting that we only accept topics about heating.
You will see that we've long since extended beyond that.
I'm a self-builder, renovating and extending a 1930's West Country farmhouse.
Please feel free to start a new topic describing your house as it is now, and your vision of what you'd like to achieve.
Photos and diagrams/sketches/doodles are helpful - to whatever standard you're happy with.

Good morning thank you for accepting me onto the forum. We have just had an ASHP installed (Sep) to replace a 37 year old oil boiler and solar panels. Thus far the ASHP is proving more expensive compared to the oil BUT the whole house is warm all the time which it most definitely wasn't before so we are not comparing like for like. We had all new pipework and increased radiators sizing and thus far from that viewpoint are happy. The property is a late 70's detached with cavity insulation and good insulation in attic. Will post further in appropriate bits of forum. We are in East Anglia and remained warm when temps went to -7 centigrade but at a considerable cost ( about double our normal daily cost when temp are +4-8 centigrade. Still learning!
Glad to hear that you are pleased with the heating of your house and generally happy. It may well be that there is scope for a bit of optimisation of the system to reduce costs so if you want to post any more detail and ask any questions please feel free. Heat pumps can take a bit of fiddling (which, for some, can become a bit obsessive) to get the absolute best out of them, but the important thing is that you are warm and generally happy!
4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.
Since 20 years owner of 6kw heatpump that has been heating my house... (a direct expanding system that takes energy from the garden).
slowly looking for replacement towards a AWHP...
