Setting different temperatures throughout the day. Good idea for ASHP?
Hi,
Ive got a Salus RT510 thermostat which controls the rads. Should I set a a standrad temperatures (19 degrees for example) across all 6 programmes? Or is it best to have different temperatures across different times of day?
Thanks
The standard advice is to only vary settings by a maximum of 2C throughout the day e.g. 20C when you're at home, 18C overnight, and 19C during daytime but house is empty. HPs cannot raise house temperature at the same rate a gas boiler would.
Whether this is good advice is open to (much) debate. The answer will probably be "it depends".

as a general rule, in a moderate to well insulated house, keep variation as little as possible. But, other factors are always in play:
- do you want it warmer in the evening for lounging comfort?
- have a time of use electricity tariff?
If the weather compensation of the heat pump is perfectly configured i.e. the variation of the flow temperature against outside temperature exactly matches the heat loss of the house at all outside temperatures, then the indoor temperature will never vary. of course, no setup is perfect. some heat pumps have load compensation as well as weather, meaning they can boost / adapt their output if an internal temperature rise is requested.
