I was reading today about the MHHS (Metering Half Hourly Settlement) and I saw a few vague comments about many renewables technologies needing to be compatible.

 

Clearly any Smart Meter is compatible, but are there any expectations for Heat Pumps to be directly aware of half hourly tariffs and is there any public information on that topic?

 

As far as I can see there will be a big change in energy suppliers offering "Agile" style tariffs after the MHHS implementation (October 2026), or at least we should expect strong signals from OFGEM to push energy supply in that direction.

Not sure whether this is quite what you have in mind but; the Homely smart controller itself can be set to follow various TOU tariffs whereby the system will endeavour to reduce consumption during more expensive periods by pre-emptive action to use more energy before the ‘spensive’ periods and then coast through at lower consumption.

I know one can set the controller to follow OE’s Cosy tariff f’rinstance but, I am unsure whether there is an ability to work on all 48 HH’s each day. I had my Homely set to follow the Cosy schedule but as I have a Powerwall battery system, I didn’t feel it was so beneficial as it might be without a battery to suck up the grid during the cheapest 8 hours per day. @toodles thanks, that's useful information about Homely.

 

What Im really asking is if there will be a requirement for new heat pumps to be compatible with the MHHS standard.

@scalextrix I thought that that was the more likely enquiry.😉

It is the old problem of the time lag before  acceptance and adoption of any new standard isn’t it? There is also the resistance due to the ‘We have always done it that way - so why change it now?’ argument, however…

I suppose what Octopus Energy are doing with their Red adopted and possibly refined technology to include 2 way communications between their Cosy heat pumps and Kraken may be heading along the right lines. However, OE may be the only adopters for a little while I feel (see my second paragraph) but one can but hope that other designers and manufacturers will ‘see the light’ soon. Regards, Toodles.
