@kev-m thanks so much for coming back to me so quickly, muchly appreciated.

I am trying to adjust the freeze stat from 7° tob3°. I have found how to get into this in the settings but it comes up with System shutdown  Y/N.  Do I have to shutdown to adjust this and will it be easy to restore?

Thank you so much again.

Hi @Linz

We have anti freeze valves on our pipes outside. These are usually factory set to bleed at 3degC. This also means we don’t have glycol in our pipework.

As you may guess you wouldn’t want to set freeze stat lower than the valves trigger temperature.. so we have our freeze stat temperature set to 4degC.

Our circulation pump is a single pump which operates at 45watts

So if you have glycol that protects to below say (minus) -15degC then you could disable the freeze stat function. But you would need to be sure of your glycol concentration level.

@linz I have the Freeze/stat function disabled on my Ecodan, with sufficient Glycol in the system, because otherwise the pump would be on all the time in Winter. Current outside temperature is 4.1C, -2 overnight, and this is more or less the best things will be here for the next few months. But you have to have Glycol in the system. It was disabled at my request by the installers, based on advice from a neighbour who had had this problem the previous winter. There is also a defrost function which is still in place. This is the beginning of my first winter with the ecodan - still using less than half the electricity my old storage heaters used despite the frosts.

I think that there may be some confusion as to what initiates the operation of the freeze stat function. It is the water temperature, not the ambient air temperature.

So if the heat pump is operating normally, the freeze stat function should not operate. My understanding is that if the heat pump is stopped for any reason, and the water temperature at the heat pump falls to the level of the freeze stat setting, the water pump will be started to circulate the water, and bring warmer water from inside the home to prevent the water from freezing at the heat pump.

No pretty sure it's the ambient outdoor temp, states in the manual - see attached screenshot

I stand corrected. I should have looked at the manual before making my assumption.

Remembering of course that at these low temperatures the heat pump would normally be operating with the water pump running, so the freeze stat operating should have no effect.

I suppose the freeze stat function may have an effect if it operates during an overnight temperature setback.

Yes that's when it runs most for us, during the nightime setback. Last night I think it came on at 8pm and ran until the heating kicked in at about 3:30am. Very tempting to reduce the point it kicks in to about 3° or 4° or wary the antifreeze valves kick in at 3°, but then it's insulated pipework, near the house taking heat from the house pipework so outside temp would surely have to be well below 0 before the valves kick in

If you set it to 3 degrees....

When outside air temperature gets to 3 degrees, it starts the circulation pumps and monitors the flow (I assume it uses the RWT sensor) temperature . If the flow drops to 15 deg, the ASHP heats it to 20 deg. And repeats ... The 15 and 20 are not adjustable.

This won't use a lot of energy but may be annoying if you want a silent overnight setback.

That's what mine does anyway. 😀

yes and yes.  It will either start up as you exit the menu or you just press the holiday/standby button to wake it up.  Nothing to worry about.

@walkers-heatpump ours comes on as soon as the temperature hits 7° outside and runs until  the temperature rises above this. Surely there isn't any chance of freezing above 3°?

@linz yes that's my feeling. I mean really even at 0° it should probably be fine as the pipes insulated and it's obviously connected to warm water inside the house. I've dropped an email to our installers to get their thoughts, wouldn't want to void any warranties! But if we can drop it to 3° then clearly it should be off a fair bit more than at 5°
