Scams we have known.
Having had an email from my solar kit installers warning me about yet another scam this morning, it reminded me of one in particular.
Some years back, on opening the front door in response to a knocking, I was met by two tall men from South Africa carrying brief cases plus charts and wodges of paper. ‘We can save you 40% (I think it was) on your electricity bill’ and telling me they were from my utility company.
I let them into the front room where they gave their spiel, laid out charts and tables and, in turns, carried on claiming they could save me all this money every month!
To humour them, I provided a meter reading and they proceeded to ‘work out’ just how much I would save. I said very little …. they carried on at great length and after what seemed like three hours but was probably only 45 minutes or so, they started suggesting I sign up… at this point, I looked at them with a dead-pan expression. I explained that I would like to look through the details at my leisure and consider my options so please send me all the details by post…. they left hurriedly and I never heard any more from them.
Don’t get me started on the phone calls from India, this is Virgin Media here…
I’m quite sure many RHH readers have had amusing attempts at being scammed - would anyone care to relate? Toodles.
Toodles, he heats his home with cold draughts and cooks his food with magnets.
I once received a scam order for computer components to be sent to an address in Airport Road, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Nigeria, with payment offered via Western Union.
Coincidentally I was already booked to travel to Nigeria the next week.
I made a slight detour, turned up at the address and asked to speak to the named buyer.
When presented with a copy of the email, a look of fear immediately spread across face.
Ever seen a Yoroba businessman turn white as a sheet? 😲
