What do we need to know before installing a heat pump?
S I take it that you said: ‘Tanks, but no Tanks.? This sort of inflexibility is going to give MCS a bad reputation — err…. Oh Yes, they have already!
Toodles, he heats his home with cold draughts and cooks his food with magnets.
Very good. And yes it was a quick goodbye to BG.

@davesoa Though our 99 litre tank was in good order and only 3-4 years old (replaced by BG when they couldn’t locate the reason for a fault in the boiler whilst under service contact - you know the one, it is called an annual service and is carried out every 18 - 20 months!), it was large enough for our washing needs. Of course MCS wouldn’t accept this and in any case, the standard or slimline heat pump HWT would not fit in our space when they hold 210 litres! Fitting the Sunamp Thermino ePV 210 was a very neat solution for us. Summer consumption averages 2.5 kW/h per day and in colder weather, this figure was 3 - 3.5 kW/h per day powered via our Eddi rom the PV. I’m very pleased with the unit and it fits in the airing cupboard! ‘Smart tanks’ look to me like a sledge hammer to crack a nut with all that plumbing, pumping system, sensors and controls! (No space except possibly in the loft if the trap were enlarged first…) Regards, Toodles.

Posted by: @davesoaFollowing my failed attempt to get a HP installed earlier this year I decided to have a heat pump ready unvented hot water tank installed. My showers work wonderfully now and water is being heated via an iBoost every day from the PVs. My plumber took great care to select the right tank. I thought I’d try British Gas and see if they would quote for a heat pump as they offer a guarantee of performance. They will, but only on the understanding that they would want to rip out the newly installed tank and put theirs in instead. They weren’t interested in discussing why they take this approach or what might be wrong with the tank.
I am guessing that they use the hp manufacturers pre plumbed cylinder to ensure that their rookie plumbers can't completely screw up.
4kW peak of solar PV since 2011; EV and a 1930s house which has been partially renovated to improve its efficiency. 7kW Vaillant heat pump.
@toodles We have (now) a World Heat air source compatible unvented hot water cylinder with all the necessary changes to pipe work that a HP installation would require. If it remains an absolute MCS requirement to have it replaced, and it’s not just BG being awkward, then I’ll just forget about a heat pump.
