@batalto makes sense, thank you. We have a single pipe radiator system built in a 1990s house (!) and so that's got to be altered, as well as 10-15 new radiators (depending on installer) plus ASHP.

I think we need add in the design time of the system. Not just the installation time. The design, from an experienced heating engineer is critical to me. As well as the heat loss and demand calculation. 
I gave a breakdown elsewhere on the forum, but you need to include a bit of time for an electrician.

The design would be done as part of the quotation and assessment? Therefore are you paying for others quotes which they don’t proceed with.

Ours is MCS, because of the RHI component. 100% of the cost of installing we'll get back. I imagine it'll be like solar. Prices have fallen quite a bit since the subsidies ended. An ASHP is basically and AC unit. Our installer is taking 2 days to install, I think he said the hardware is 60% of the cost as the GHG caps the labour cost at no more than 40% of the total cost, so I cant really see how 2 days work is £4k - as its £10k all in. The guy is paying himself £2k a day, lets say 2 of them, that's around £120/hr each, for an 8hr day.

I think the problem is/was with the GHG.  GHG capping the labour cost at 40% = supplier will charge 40%.  We had the same issue with GHG-funded insulation. 

I don't think our ASHP suppliers did this to the same extent.  Their itemised invoice looked reasonable and there were 4 of them for two days plus some design work behind the scenes.
