Underfloor heating specification for heat pump
Hi.
Long time reader, first time poster.
I've followed a lot of the threads on here with interest and found them really useful in helping to plan for installing a heat pump, but I haven't seen any discussion of underfloor heating other than to say that it is generally considered to work well with ASHPs.
We're in the process of renovating a 1920s semi in the north of England with a view to replacing the gas boiler with ASHP in the next few years when funds allow. We want to install underfloor heating in the ground floor which we are currently working on. We had some heat loss calculations done for the house last year to understand what size heat pump we would need and any upgrading of radiators etc that would be required. We said at the time that we would be installing UFH in the ground floor. The calculations that were done recommended 100mm pipe centres for the UFH to provide sufficient output at ASHP flow temperature of 50°C.
The ground floor is a suspended timber floor throughout. I was hoping to install the UFH using an overlay system on top of the floor boards (I can insulate from below via basement), however most of the systems available seem to use a minimum of 150mm pipe spacing.
I have read elsewhere that 150mm is the maximum pipe spacing recommended for use with a heat pump, so wondering if this will be alright. The heat calcs assume a design temperature of 21°C. We rarely have the heating above 18°C so I wonder if the lower output might be fine for us.
I assume a lot of people on here have UFH with their heat pumps so would be interested to know what pipe spacing people have and if anyone has had issues with the output not being high enough? Also if anyone has recommendations for a good system to use on suspended floors any advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks!
