Heat pump size advice – is 16kW overkill for this property?

Im looking for some second opinions to confirm what I think about a Thermal Earth installation in a neighbours house. I just want to be sure that the mainstream of thinking is the same as mine. Thermal Earth did a heat loss report (not shared with owner) which predicted a 5835W loss. The owner then told them she might at some point in the future convert a garage space of 30 m2. They have subsequently fitted a 16kW Acond heat pump. Their argument was that the extra heating requirement tipped it over their original choice so they went for the next one up.They havent said yet what their original choice of unit was, but it would have been an Acond. I estimate that the 30m2 space built to regs would add at most an extra 1200W giving a total of 7035W loss. Does anyone else think that it is outrageous and inappropriate to fit a 16 kW model? Her usage for the last week was 255 kWh and she prefers her house cool. Thanks in advance

@bontwoody, it's bizarre how established companies just don't care about the quality of their work or bad reviews. Ironically, these guys are training other installers: https://www.thermalearth.co.uk/niceic-training-course

It blows my mind how this can even happen and this got me thinking. There's quite a lot of knowledge we've all accrued on the forums. Anyone want to start an installer training course with me? 🤣

@editor I do find it bizarre, looking at a companies Trustpilot and Google reviews is one of the first things I check. I can only assume there is so much demand out there that people just take a risk. Im sure Thermal Earth must realise that they have oversized the heatpump, so its not a training issue with them!

So the latest is that the company Thermal Earth are refusing to do full handover until the client has paid the bill in full with no guarantees that the 16kW heat pump will work efficiently in warm weather. That includes giving the client the ability to alter the heat pumps settings. I would advise people to say well clear of them.

I suppose your neighbour could conveniently forget to pay the bill until the warmer weather comes along and the systems operation can be assessed.

I will certainly be adding Thermal Earth to the list. Do you think that a toilet roll will be long enough? 😋

@bontwoody in terms of "mild conditions test", its pretty mild now, and by monday its 12C. Can you see what the system is actually running at ?

My wife’s house: 1946 3 bed end of terrace in Somerset, ASHP with rads + UFH, triple glazed, retrofit IWI in troublesome rooms, small rear extension.

@iancalderbank I didnt see this Ian, what was it you were bringing to my attention?

Latest update on Thermal Earth is they have verbally agreed to provide a written guarantee of performance but still have not managed to give the owner control of her system via the app.

Worryingly the person who was helping me with the Acond, has had a catastrophic failure of his unit after 16 months. So far T.E arent replying to his messages!

that is exactly what I was bringing to your attention, I saw their post on oem. (linked in the word this in my previous post)
