Air source heat pumps and noise
I’m putting together a short video to show how much noise air source heat pumps actually make. If you’d like participate, please download a decibel measuring app to your phone. Here’s a great free one for iPhones.
Then record a video of your heat pump using the aforementioned app standing 3-5 metres away. This will show your heat pump in operation with the corresponding dB values.
Then simply use wetransfer.com to send me your video to editor@renewableheatinghub.co.uk and be sure to include your make and model.

I already have this app. Will comply soon but it's tipping down with rain here at the moment.
Retrofitted 11.2kw Mitsubishi Ecodan to new radiators commissioned November 2021.
14 x 500w Monocrystalline solar panels.
2 ESS Smile G3 10.1 batteries.
ESS Smile G3 5kw inverter.
@morgan A splendid idea Mars! I’ve installed that app but our ASHP is getting in some Zzz’s as it is quite mild, I’ll leave it until tomorrow as it is starting to get dark now. I will perform the deed from 3 metres for we live in an area with high ambient noise levels; from 5 metres, you might only hear the traffic etc.Regards, Toodles.

@allyfish, yes I just received it. I need three more to complete the first video.

It's stopped raining here, for a bit, 🙄 however the ASHP is barely turning over so any noise data would be pointless at the moment.

@morgan, no problem. Fire it across when you’re ready.

Morning Mars
It will be interesting to see other experiences. I have uploaded a short video and screenshot of a noise meter.
My 16kw LG Therma V seems to make 55 - 60dB noise in standard mode and perhaps goes up towards 65dB when its at full speed fans & pumps. Its mild today so I cant crank it up to max!
We are fortunate that we're not very close to neighbours and the ASHP is located round the back away from outdoor seating and away from windows that normally get used much. So for us has not been an issue. But I would suggest it certainly should be properly considered when doing a new installation.

I still need two more clips to complete the first dedicated video, so if you have a few minutes, please consider filming and sending across your heat pump in operation. It'll make a great reference video for people that are concerned about heat pump noise.
Also, I've put together this Q&A post on the site, where I will embed the dedicated video(s) when it's ready: https://renewableheatinghub.co.uk/how-loud-noisy-are-air-source-heat-pumps
The videos that have been sent across make a quick cameo appearance in the intro video.

Hi @editor sent mine over - video from 19/12 with the outdoor unit from our 16kw Daikin Altherma HT struggling to drown out ambient bird song 😀 We are in Italy so not sure the video will be of use but feel free to use it if you wish. Outdoor air temp at 10am was 5.4C, 80% humidity, windspeed 7.9kmh (as given by www.visualcrossing.com/weather/weather-data-services).
fwiw i believe my installation was done properly with a good base (old oil boiler concrete base that we made a little larger), level and with vibration absorbing feet etc.
Installation was Aug 2020. I'm unaware whether LG have improved sound reduction since but overall am happy enough with ours - because its located out of the way.
If located nearer neighbours or opening windows or seating areas etc then it could be annoying? But remember the main usage is in winter when windows are more likely closed and less likely to be sat outdoors for long anyway!

@editor Thank you Mars, our ASHP is ready to sign autographs when people have watched the cameo appearance at the start! As I mentioned, we have high ambient noise levels from traffic but birdsong may still be heard in the recording but very little from the heat-pump for all that! Regards, Toodles.
