Thanks, @editor, will do.

For now, though, what I can say is that this December has seen us consuming around 580kWh with the coldest days (-2ish degC) running at around 21kWh. Overall the COP for the month was just over 3.5 and ranging from 2.5 on the coldest parts to about 4.5 during the milder bits.

It’s been a rubbish month for solar generation, but we’ve still managed about 30kWh since install on 15th, so a reasonable offset for the ASHP. Interestingly, though, the system has learned to be topping up the battery from the grid overnight, so pretty much all our consumption over Christmas has been night time prices with very little daytime power pulled in from the grid. That’s a big saving on its own.

I worked out that if every month this coming year was effectively another December weather-wise, we’d save about £400 against our previous oil consumption. The real savings when the warmer sunnier weather comes will be really interesting to see.

Introducing my self here. I am a London based installer of heating systems, and concerned that many well intentioned purchasers of heat pumps are missing out on optimum performance, of what is effectively state if the art heat pumps by mixing control strategies.

in fairness this is because of regulations that do not promote “seamless bundles” which offer easy optimisation

Professional installer

Alec,

could you expand on what you mean regarding the control strategies and seamless bundles you mention?

@kev-m essential where the controls come from the same manufacturer as the heat pump, but with the proviso that the communication between the two is two way using bus language

Brendan, who used to frequent this forum, championed, I believe, a similar theory.

I’m in the process of changing mine and await delivery prior to instal.  Recently had an LG Ecodan ASHP installed.  The installers chose to control this with a Heatmiser Neostat Air V2.  I now have the LG wifi room sensor and expect delivery of the LG wifi receiver hopefully next week.  Is that what your post alludes to?

@morgan sorry it’s not a theory. A compensating controller will tell the heat pump or electronic mixer  to lower flow temperature as target room temp rises

Well excuse me for the utterly unforgivable mistake of using a word in error 🙄

Please don’t concern yourself re answering a question.  Have a nice day.

@kev-m i only mention this as it might be worth editing your post as quite often people search for specific manufacturers. It is not to catch you out i promise.

I think you meant Mitsubishi rather than LG?

@jeff,

I did notice but it was @morgan's post, not mine.

Thank you for your input Alec.

I think that it has already been established that the equipment manufacturers automatic control system is superior to thermostats and the like. You need to educate the system designers and installers who insist on convincing customers to have the wrong equipment installed in the first place.
