Two Heat Geeks say that an ASHP for my property will cost £25,000

Were do you go when two heat geeks say an air source heat pump is not going to work? We had a calculation done and were told we would need to spend £25k to do everything for a heat pump. They also said there was know certainty. This house is just reaching 20 years old and is D band energy efficiency. How do I decarbonise my heating with out getting a second job? We are on oil due to being in the Glens of Antrim. Everyone I speak to is like heat pumps don't work and this seems to have proved them right.

@toodles it a better brand than the MCS had and if it is to be believed install are seeing a significant better SCOP than set by MCS. Also they have a better guarantee of fixing a problem than MCS do.

@nicholab My brother in law is having a heat geek install tomorrow, I will be able to give a first hand opinion after its done. One point in their favour was reducing the proposed size down from 16 kW (EDF proposal) down to 8kW 🤣

@nicholab From what I read of the MCS’s ability to guarantee fixing any problems, they have still not erupted their milk teeth! I am very grateful that our install has not required us to ask for their assistance in any way! I hope that forums such as this will in time, encourage the likes of MCS to pull their socks up! MCS and Heat Geek are not the same thing. MCS is a standard that any Heat Geek, or any other installer, has to abide by. It is not an installation standard, it just ensures the installer have ticked a married of irrelevant boxes and claiming lots of fees for the pleasure.

Heat Geek is effectively a club.

@heacol If I may enquire please: Where do the funds come from to finance the MCS? Would it be any chance be a combination of the installers and the Government/Tax Payers? Regards, Toodles.

@toodles Spot on, mostly from installers therefore end users, someone has to pay for it.

However, that is only a very small part of the cost. I ran MCS for over 12 years, the average cost of maintaining compliance over that time was in the region of £2500.00 per installation. On average, I installed between 50 and 100 units a year.

The reason MCS installations are so expensive. It is not the installers making the money.

@toodles @editor Spent a couple of days at my brother in law's and the WDS Green Energy installation was well organised and tidily done. I was a little surprised by a couple of the choices namely that

1. There were still using antifreeze rather than anti-freeze valves and water

2. The outside piping could have be made half the length if they had entered the garage sooner.

3. A buffer vessel was fitted but configured as a volumiser. When I queried why one was necessary they stated that the warranty would be invalid without it.

The fitters were all advocates of the technology having themselves had one fitted, the oldest guy had a Dimplex 20 years ago!

I will look forward to seeing how well it performs, Mars, did you want another review?

All that bare pipework has been lagged/insulated since the picture was taken?

@bontwoody A few minus points there possibly then but, please let us know how it progresses. On the matter of the pipe run, isn’t it normal to converse with the householders and plan the shortest practical route? Our installers certainly discussed the proposed pipe run first. Regards, Toodles
