Holiday mode vs thermostat control
Hi everyone, I’m sure this has been asked before but I couldn’t find quite the same q when I looked.
If I am going away in winter, so with a possibility of freezing temps, is holiday mode a better option than just turning the thermostat down to say 15 degrees and turning off the HW?
I know how to it by date, but I don’t know what my holiday mode settings actually are - I looked on YouTube and didn’t find this covered. Is it standard or does it different by installer?
Thanks!
I believe 'holiday mode' achieves the same thing i.e. during the times you mark as holiday, a fixed temp target is set. This tends to be controlled by a room thermostat. There will be "anti-freezing" settings on your HP to stop it from freezing, but you might want higher than that. It probably depends on how long you are away, and whether you want to try "pre-heating" your house before you return, as a HP will take a long time to get your house from, say, 10C, back up to 20C on your return.
Personally, I'd just flip things down to 15C and ignore any holiday mode. Given HW heating is a fraction of heating costs, and it'll take very little energy to maintain a cylinder that's not being used, I'd leave HW heating on. Just remember that a static tank is more like to encourage Legionella than one being used. I've read that running HW for 5 minutes on return is a good idea. (the Heat Geek article on Legionella is very good).

@mikefl thank you! Yes I think I’ll do that, and then maybe run a quick legionella cycle on return. And hope it’s not too cold when we get back so we can heat back up again in not too long!
