Decisions to make on 12000 kWh per year for heating and DHW
Posted by: @chrishi thankyou for replying.I have 4kw solar,so could look at batteries.log burners do draw internally,so this could be changed.ground, first floor all insulated, roof 100mm celotex, all heating pipes insulated in floors.
vettenfall are developing a high temperature ashp apparently for older properties,a direct swop for gas/oil with high flow temperature, hopefully a possible solution!!
i have no problem with changing over to ashp as long as it works and is viable.£6000 a year,on a pension is not.
Is there anyone who has changed and was in a similar position as me.
From my understanding, HT ASHP's just make it easier to replace gas or oil boilers, since the original radiators may be deemed adequate and therefore would not need to be replaced. As far as I am aware HT ASHP's do not make the system more efficient, in fact are more likely to make it less efficient. The higher the LWT, the more energy required to produce it.
There are things that you can do to maximise your solar PV usage, and hence minimise your oil usage. If you have a hot water cylinder then you could have an electrical power diverter installed to help provide hot water from Spring through to Autumn.
Battery storage, charged from your solar PV, could help reduce your electrical energy consumption, particularly during the evening peak period. During the Winter months the batteries could be charged on a cheap overnight tariff, thereby supplying your electrical needs throughout the whole day.
Rather than an Air to Water (A2W) ASHP you could consider an Air to Air (A2A) ASHP system (think air conditioning with heating). This again would allow you to maximise your solar PV usage and reduce your oil consumption. Whilst not totally getting rid of your oil boiler, it would be a much cheaper alternative than an A2W ASHP. As they say, 'every little helps'.
I hope that within the next year or so, the war in Ukraine will come to an end, and the World energy markets will start to stabilise. In the meantime OFGEM should be closely monitoring the UK energy markets, to ensure that companies are not taking advantage of the situation to boost their profits.
