Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)

Some of you might be aware, but I just moved to octopus Go and I now have super cheap nighttime power; 5p/KW from 00.30 to 04.30. currently I am running the central heating then and filling my battery. However a thought occurred to me, should I set my AC to come on at that time and crank out hot air instead of using the radiators. Would this be a more efficient way to heat a large room overnight Vs the central heating?

Really interested to hear peoples thoughts on this one. I'd need to relocate my thermostat to a "cold" room so the other rooms were still warmed, but it seems to me a much better way to push heat around given the lower costs.

Hi Batalto,

That is precisely what I do, only in reverse. I use the A2A ASHP to raise the temperature during daylight hours when I can power it from my solar PV system. I suppose for you it depends on the rating of your A2A compared to your A2W, and how you want the heat energy distributed. But don't forget, your A2A will not be as efficient when the outside air temperature is lower overnight.

@derek-m it's much smaller than our A2W. However it's in our main living space. I could easily time it to run for 4 hours at the low tariff point, so we have carry over into the morning. I might experiment with it.

As a note I set the batteries to charge last night and it seems to be a success. Currently running on battery as we speak with 75% left
