I woke up this morning in wet Herefordshire to an Ecodan 14 system installed by a  local company Caplor. The air pump is quiet and seems to be working well.  The install became a nightmare as the installer found rat dropping in the attic and refused to go in there so we have been unable to add the two extra very large radiators that are needed. The old oil boiler was part of a Stanley system so we have lost our oven as well. But we were determined to reduce our carbon footprint so the oil system had to go.   I had hoped that the installer would make two zones but after the discovery of rats he was keen to leave and so we only have one zone which Im disappointed at as we have one area set up as a holiday let.

Another worry is that some in the group state  running costs are higher than expected. We were lucky and manged to get a Green Home voucher but with extra costs for four radiators etc I am hoping that that there is no surge in running costs.

Choosing a good tariff supply is critical.  What do people recommend?

Hi @mikefitz and welcome to the forum. Your installer must have been a “townie”. All county folk have mice or rat droppings in the loft. 😊

I’m over the border in Worcestershire.

I would recommend you investigate Octopus Energy. I’ll be the first to offer my code where you receive £50 and I receive £50

share.octopus.energy/sunny-elk-398

They really are a better energy company. You will need a smart meter. I’m on Octopus Go and pay 13.9p/kWh during the day and 5p/kWh from 12:30 to 4:30am. Ideal for charging my EV. They have other agile tariffs as well.

Please do a picture story and review of your installer and installation elsewhere on the forum.

@mikefitz, how long have you been running your ASHP?

The tariff is key to the running costs - we've been using Symbio as our electricity provider since November. They're the best rates we could find. Their customer service is non-existent, which hasn't been an issue for us; yet.

Our rads are also on one zone, which is a pain, but you'll discover with an ASHP that it doesn't make a difference to the running costs whether you're heating everything or just certain zones. If you want to regulate temperatures in your holiday let, get some smart TRVs or thermostats that are passwords protected and people won't be able to crank up the temperatures. Our Salus smart thermostats can be locked to prevent fiddling.

@mikefitz, I had no idea it was such a recent install. Good luck and let us know how you come along.

@mikefitz I could maybe understand if a rat ran over him or bit him but just droppings?  What a wimp.

Tariffs can be a bit of a minefield and tips from others don't always work because tariffs aren't all nationwide.  Also, a lot of the comparison sites are not whole market.  Use the Citizens Advice or Which comparison site because they are.  We use Symbio. I'm still on Economy 7 at 11.6 day/7.6 night but that's not available any more.  Their billing method is 'interesting' to say the least but they were the cheapest for us by quite a long way so I put up with it.  @julianc's Octopus deal looks interesting, especially if you have an EV or battery storage.

@mikefitz, we run our heating at 45C during the winter. With our new Stelrad’s we might drop off to 40C next winter because they chuck out a lot of heat.
