GSM isn't going to work either, same issue.  Looks like we might be in the 100,000 dead zone.

So ask for an IHD with WiFi connectivity.... sometimes referred to as a CAD.

We assume you must be able to access the internet because you're writing to this Forum! 😘

@transparent You have mentioned problems relating to this randomised offset several times, is the system capable of advising the energy supplier of the meter’s actual offset details to allow means of computation? I know the reasoning behind the offset but is does seem to create more difficulties as well! Regards, Toodles.

My full explanation of the Randomised Offset feature starts here in the topic about Incorrect Billing.

There is a SMETS command to read the three registers holding data on the Randomised Offset.
However, I haven't yet been able to obtain an answer as to whether that command operates across the HAN, WAN or both.

I do, however, have a beautifully-crafted letter from a Minister of State at DESNZ telling my MP that the accuracy of Smart Meters is governed by the Measuring Instruments Regulations (SI 2016/1153). When a Minister fails to understand the difference between the accuracy of the Meter and the inaccuracy of the Supplier's billing-software, then you know it's going to take months of correspondence before they'll even appreciate the problem I'm trying to discuss. 😥

Whatever 'difficulties' may seem to exist due to the SMETS2 Spec including the requirement for the Randomised Offset, they will pale into insignificance when the penny finally drops and the public realise they've been systematically overcharged for years!

Although it's feasible to calculate the amount of excess profit which Suppliers will have made, it isn't possible to assess by how much each customer should be refunded.
That's a technical distinction which requires a level of arithmetic calculation beyond the depths to which this Forum should plunge!

@transparent I had a feeling that might be the case! The day when one’s supplier might accurately assess what energy should be charged for at which rate is not just round the corner then.😒 (I suspect this might be a good time to consider buying shares in aspirin manufacturers, there are likely to be many a headache before we see a resolution!) Regards, Toodles.

As this is a systemic failure @toodles I feel it should be brought to the attention of the Commons Select Committee on Energy. That's in the process of being convened, with the Chairman already announced as Bill Esterson MP (Sefton Central).

That page gives an email address for the Committee commonsesnz@parliament.uk which means it won't get filtered out, as happens when a non-Constituent tries to contact an MP via their Parliamentary address.

I have spoken with the Clerk to the Committee who informs me that now is the time when the Committee decides which matters they will investigate. So if 'we' want the full set of Smart Meter features be be implemented, then we should tell the Chair that this isn't presently the case.

Provide the link to the discussion on this Forum about incorrect billing. He can then see that there is evidence available for the Committee to review.

Oh, dear. It's amazing what tricks one's eyes will play....

@Transparent, I quickly scanned through your post and as a result misread that as "CommonSense@parliament.uk", and was quite surprised for a moment or two at your suggestion that an MP's emails would not, in fact, have Common Sense filtered out before it hit their inbox. I was quite hopeful until I realised my mistake.

@majordennisbloodnok

“What do we want?”

“Common sense”

”When do we want it?”

”Now!” 😉

Would that be a demonstration of common sense?

I quickly scanned through your post and as a result misread that as "CommonSense@parliament.uk"

I've come across several instances of 'accidental' humour when corresponding with Parliament.
Junior civil servants are known for seeing what acronyms and puns they can get past senior officials.

Funnily enough, the previous Chair of the Select Committee on ESNZ suffered from an outbreak of common sense shortly after his name had been put forward.

Angus Macneil MP of the Outer Hebrides had the whip removed by the SNP, which resulted in him chairing the Committee as an Independent.
There were numerous light-hearted moments during the Committee's oral hearings...
... at which point the SNP thought better of their decision and invited him to rejoin the party.

Typically, he declined their kind offer, thus depriving the SNP of having any member on that Committee.

Inevitably, he wasn't re-selected to contest the seat in May...

If others want to follow @toodles lead and write to the Committee, bear in mind that they are still to choose all the Members, let alone decide the areas of their inquiries.

We need to be fairly broad in identifying the "areas of concern" which they might be interested to look into.
However, there are some topics which are particularly relevant at the moment:

A: NESO will have just acquired a licence to operate UK energy networks...
... and the Regional Energy Strategic Plan organisations have yet to created. See Ofgem Consultation here, which closes on 8th Oct.

So where do NESO and the RESP proposals make any room for input from members of the general public with useful expertise?

B: Look at the classic diagram showing the (adopted policy of the) Future Energy Scenarios:

FESdiag shaded

Are NESO pursuing only the System Transformation scenario and ignoring the benefits of engaging Consumers in reaching Net Zero?

What does the Committee think?

C: The Government is way off the target numbers of heat-pumps to be installed each month.
And yet this Forum has the required expertise and insights to get HPs installed more successfully.

Perhaps one of us should get the statistics of HP Installs from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and plot them on a graph for the Chairman to see.

Here's an early example of mine, which is now well out of date:

HP InstallsGraph

Finally, remember almost everything which a Select Committee gets to see is black text on a white background.
Anything with graphics content will stand out.

I have received a reply:

You are correct that the Committee will, in next few weeks be established and have MPs appointed to it.  One of their first roles is to have a look and consider what issues the Committee is interested in examining.  There are a lot of competing voices offering suggestion and I will ensure that your suggestion is among those we put to the Committee when it makes its decision.

Regards
