Act now to defer the UK road tax increase on EVs

Just in case anyone is not aware, the UK road fund licence will be applied to EVs from 1 April, at a basic rate of £195 p.a. - there are exceptions of course for elderly EVs.

It is however possible to re-licence an EV this month at the old £0 rate which then covers the period from 1 Mar 2025 until 28 Feb 2026.

This defers the new £195 rate until 1 March 2026.

You can do this on the DVLA website using the reg number and the 10 digit reference number on the V5 document.  It takes about 2 minutes.

Agreed it is easy, have your V5 to hand. I feel soo guilty having not paid VED for years.... 🤔 🤔

I might feel guilty if VED revenue was used for vehicle-related stuff - but it's not.

VED doesn't go towards the upkeep of the transport network any more or less than VAT. It's just a generic tax to raise revenue for public spending in general. I certainly don't beat myself up about any of the legal and well established methods of avoiding paying unnecessary amounts of income tax so I don't see why I should feel guilty about availing myself of an incentive to drive an electric vehicle. Clean conscience and guilt-free.
