Painting on insulation: Emperor Paint Masonry Creme
We’ve applied a coat of Emperor Paint’s Exterior Masonry Creme which creates a hydrophobic shield on brickwork. Emperor Paints claim that it keeps masonry up to 6C warmer which should hopefully lower our energy costs this winter. We’ll keep you updated if it works.

@Jeff, good timing to follow up. I've actually scheduled myself to do a follow up and update this week. I've been waiting for the temperatures to drop to below zero and I'll take the thermal camera out to see if there's any external difference. The house, inside, has been snug and warm, but not sure how much of that can be attributed to the masonry creme. The thermal imaging will hopefully make a case.

@editor wouldn't thermal imaging only give you the outside temps? Surely you'd need the thermals on the inside? I would assume the benefit of the paint, reading your article, is that the water runs off, thereby stopping heat transfer and losses. I guess you can compare the outdoor temps to see if it's closer to ambient than it was before painting? But there are a lot of variables
@Jeff, I forgot to provide feedback. There's been no way for me to determine whether the masonry paint has worked or not because we've done loads of small things to further insulate the house, but this winter we've been able to retain heat better than in previous years. So it's good steps in the right direction. We've been better than ever on cold, wet days with blasting winds.

Did you not send Kirsten out in the poring rain and gales to check with the thermal camera? 😋
