My ASHP Installation: Mitsubishi Ecodan 14kW
Our ASHP is being installed 5th April I thought it might be of interest to others to hear how it progresses. It's all become real because we have the confirmed installation date and the ASHP is being delivered direct to my house on Monday 22nd. Some details.
We live in a 1990 165 m2 4 bed bungalow. Insulation is quite good and we are also getting new windows and doors in the next few months. Heating now is 8 storage heaters, one wood burner, one SF stove, 2 electric towel rails, one electric UFH system in an ensuite and a couple of portable electric heaters for occasional use. HW is E7 immersion and electric showers. As you would expect, electricity bills are high. We haven't lived here a whole year yet but I reckon £1800 a year and it's only that low because there are only two of us (and of course we've had no visitors!). We will use less wood and coal too as the stoves change from necessities to nice to haves.
We are using a company called JL Phillips, based in Newark. They are doing the whole installation including the ASHP, cylinder and 12 radiators split into 2 zones. They have done an initial quote (with the price) and a full survey. I'll get the results of that, including the heat loss calculations and radiator specs, next week.
We are having a Mitsubishi Ecodan 14kW ASHP and a 250L Heatrea Sadia Mega flow cylinder. Our requirement was calculated at 11kW so we could have gone for a smaller ASHP but they recommended the bigger one.
In preparation I've been removing storage heaters (most of the rads are going in the same locations) and I've just laid a concrete slab outside for the ASHP. We have plenty space and our nearest neighbours are 30-40m away. It's going outside the kitchen and well away from bedrooms and living room. Although we live in a conservation area, our ASHP falls within permitted development so no planning permission is needed.
The RHI was a big incentive for us. It will cover about 70% of the cost and I hope savings will cover most of the rest. I doubt we would be getting an ASHP without it so it has done its intended job.
That's about all for now. I'll update this thread as things progress. Next event should be the ASHP arrival on Monday. Which reminds me, I need to clear a space in the garage!
That's brilliant Kev. How exciting, and April 5 is just around the corner. Detailing your progress will be super useful for others to read.
Question about your rads - did they recommend upsizing any, or will that only be revealed next week when you get your heat loss calculations? Also, are your rads K2s?
Look forward to the update on Monday.

Mars, no upsizing as such as we don't have any rads at the moment. The quote we got says all rads will be Stelrad K2.
@kev-m, nice. From what I've heard Stelrads are awesome. We've just ordered five K3s for rooms that are not coping with some K2s and some single core rads. Hopefully they'll be fitted in the next month.

I will be watching this thread with great interest. The same company have quoted us and, apart from the size of ASHP, the rest is identical. I hope your install goes well and does as you hope 🤞. Did you have any other companies quote you?
Retrofitted 11.2kw Mitsubishi Ecodan to new radiators commissioned November 2021.
14 x 500w Monocrystalline solar panels.
2 ESS Smile G3 10.1 batteries.
ESS Smile G3 5kw inverter.
@morgan, yes I got a quote from another local company. They didn't visit but based it on the EPC and a floorplan I sent. It was £16-17k all in (dependent on survey/requirements) but they didn't give specifics about ASHP/cylinder size or manufacturer.
Strangely I’m struggling to even get responses. I leave a message re contact on web sites and nobody gets back. JL Phillips are the only one so far. The same applies re wall insulation. Quite odd really. I have to say that Rob from Phillips impressed me greatly and the seem to be a very experienced company.

I think a lot of companies are busy with GHG work? I don't know.
Anyway, I got an email this morning asking of they can install a week earlier due to a postponement, so that's Monday 29th for 2 days, which is fine by us (just about). We'll need to get our skates on with the prep work though; storage heaters, towel rails and even some kitchen cupboards to be removed and made good. I've already had to replaster one wall; hopefully won't need to do more, just some minor repairs. Anyone want over a tonne of firebricks? 😉
This is the ASHP, which arrived this morning as planned.
And this is where it's going. I built a concrete plinth about 1100x850mm. The back of the ASHP needs to be 330mm from the wall. The kitchen is the other side of the wall. The nearest house facing that wall is about 40m away behind a huge laurel hedge and fence. It's on the side of the house but not visible from the front as our garage is in the way.
@kev-m, that's brilliant. It's all taking shape and on track.

Wow looks like it will be soon time for installation day . Hope all goes well ! Will watch with interest see how you get on , good luck 🤞!
An update. I have spent a lot of today going through the heat loss and radiator sizing calculations that our supplier sent us (on time as promised) yesterday. Any worries I had that the system might be undersized and/or the radiators wouldn't be able to cope with the low temperatures are gone. It's all calculated on the MCS spreadsheet and you can see exactly how everything is worked out. We ended up with three more radiators than on the original quote. Our living room now has three (it's quite big at about 40m2) and we have two in the hall instead of one (a bungalow hence a big hall). One of the bathrooms has a radiator instead of a towel rail. I had some questions for the supplier, which they answered, and I'm as happy as someone about to pay out over 16 grand can be!
The heat loss was worked out for each room with standard room temps (19-21 deg depending on the room) at -3 deg outside and radiator sizing at an average flow temp of 45 deg (50 out and 40 back). This will vary according to outside temp so will hopefully be a lot less most of the time. DHW is 50 deg with the usual legionnaire boost.
The radiators are all Stelrad K2s; so double panels. They are bigger than those for a 'normal' heating system but not excessively so. The smallest is 1000x600 and the biggest 1400x600 with a couple of sizes in between. They are bigger than the storage heaters they are replacing but then that means they'll cover all the repairs/cracks underneath!
SPF on the certificate is 3.3. If we average anything over 2.5 I'll be delighted because that would half my heating and DHW costs. We'll see. RHI will be the maximum at about £1500/year based on the EPC.
That's about it for now I think. I've just removed the last of the eight storage heaters (a horrible job with crumbly 40 year old insulation and accumulated dust). The cylinder is coming tomorrow and everything starts on Monday.
I'm looking forward to it all being done!
