Infrared heating
I haven't read so can't vouch for it. Includes hybrid heat pumps, sunamp batteries and infrared heating.
I'm going to misquote everyone's favourite warp drive engineer, "Ye cannae change the laws of physics!"
IR heaters can't produce more energy than they consume. They might make you feel warmer emitting less energy than other space heating heating systems but so might a fan heater that blows how air directly on you. Or you could wear electrically heated slippers, gloves or even clothing; that would keep you warm for not much energy.
I'm sure IR heaters may suit some people in some properties but I can't see them being a mass market replacement for GCH or ASHPs. They should though be very cheap to buy and install, given their relative simplicity.
I won't name names but other, nationally marketed direct electric heating systems attract a lot of complaints about false claims and being very, very expensive to buy and run.
@hannah I have now spoken to Vinh (the author of the report). He had the following to say to me via email. I have provided the BOLD and Underline
"The report form part of the 12-hour business assists that our EnTRESS project provided to the local business, Solution by Jigsaw Ltd. We have various meetings and discussions with the company before conducting the numerical theoretical study and reviewing the results after.
It’s noted that the study is a numerical study using a building thermal simulation tool. You cannot jump to a conclusion about efficiency whilst the central gas heating requires all rooms heated linked to any occupied room compared to IR panels only heat the room in use. The thermodynamic simulation uses simulated hourly performance to predict an overall annual performance.
Hope it helps,
Vinh"
Clearly they do not believe overall efficiency numbers should be used; even though they are stated in his own report?!
