Is there a shortage of trained engineers who can service ASHPs? Our heat pump supplier is too far away for an engineer to come to us in South Wales- we'd pay more for his travel time than his time doing the work, but so far companies who install ASHPs seem only to be servicing their own installations.

The original installing company no longer exists.

I suspect yes. In this part of North East Scotland, Mitsubishi use a small specialist company, who have spotted a market opportunity, to do their warranty servicing and repairs. The company specialise in Daiken and Mitsubishi and only do that, no installations. They are super knowledgeable and can squeeze every drop of efficiency from a properly installed system. I think we are going to need many more like them as heatpump usage increases.

Why do you need it serviced? It's not a combustion appliance.... It's a fridge, in your garden.

2.4kW solar, 15kWh Seplos Mason, Outback power systems 3kW inverter/charger, solid fuel heating with air/air for shoulder months, 10 acres of heathland/woods.

My wife’s house: 1946 3 bed end of terrace in Somerset, ASHP with rads + UFH, triple glazed, retrofit IWI in troublesome rooms, small rear extension.

@morgan I wouldn’t know, I won’t have anything to do with the clowns at MCS. They serve to stifle the transition to low carbon heating and their very existence just pushes up costs for end users.

As for servicing, your unvented cylinder needs an inspection under the g3 regs, but any plumber can do that. The outdoor unit needs a wash, that’s about it.

As it’s basically a large mini split, with an EEV, traditional aircon servicing doesn’t really apply (verifying the charge by checking the superheat and subcooling), so there’s nothing to do there.

As I hinted at in my post, I wouldn’t bother.

Your choice.

However the installer and manufacturer warranty may well require a regular service to maintain said warranty throughout the existence of warranty.

@morgan almost certainly, yes… if you’re the sort who likes a warranty then servicing will be a requirement to maintain that.

Although like most warranties, they’re usually as leaky as a colander
