What Level of Customer Support Should I Expect From My ASHP Manufacturer & Installer?

When it comes to owning a heat pump, understanding how support and warranties work can make all the difference if things go wrong. In our latest episode of Homeowners’ Q&A, we sit down with Joseph Burdon from Mitsubishi Electric, Max Waddingham from Good Energy, and Geoff, a seasoned homeowner from the Renewable Heating Hub community, to answer homeowners’ most pressing questions about heat pump warranties, service schedules, and support.

One of the standout questions came from a homeowner concerned about the impact of skipping annual servicing on their heat pump warranty. Joseph explained that most manufacturers require annual servicing to uphold warranty agreements, and skipping this could indeed void the warranty. He also highlighted that Mitsubishi, like most manufacturers, provides a detailed servicing schedule, and installers should be logging this as part of their job.

Max added a key insight from the installer’s perspective, noting that while servicing heat pumps might sound like an additional hassle compared to gas boilers, it’s relatively simple. He mentioned that checking filters, glycol levels and ensuring no leaves or debris are clogging the external unit are part of routine maintenance. Max also stressed that any installer worth their salt should follow the manufacturer’s service guidelines.

Geoff, as a homeowner, reflected on his own experience, where servicing offered peace of mind. While his installer provided him with a reasonable service plan, he also noted that many homeowners in the Renewable Heating Hub community feel overcharged for these services. However, he agreed that the service is essential not only for maintaining warranties but also for ensuring the system runs efficiently.

Another recurring theme in the episode was the importance of communication between manufacturers, installers and homeowners. Geoff emphasised the collaborative nature of his relationship with both his installer and the manufacturer. He believes that having good communication lines with both parties helps ensure that any potential issues can be addressed quickly and efficiently.

Joseph also tackled a common homeowner concern: who to contact if an installer is no longer available, or worse, has gone out of business. In such cases, homeowners should be able to reach out directly to the manufacturer for support. Mitsubishi, for instance, has a network of service engineers who can take over if an installer is unavailable. This makes it clear that choosing a heat pump brand with a robust support network is crucial.

If you’re a homeowner considering or already using a heat pump, this episode is a must-watch to better understand how servicing, warranties and manufacturer support work together to keep your system running smoothly, an
