I’m a little late posting this, but it’s genuinely one of my favourite podcast conversations of the year.

As you all know, I spend plenty of time harping on about poor heat pump installation standards in the UK, so I wanted to find out what the situation looks like across the Atlantic. In this episode, I’m joined by JT Stewart (lead chair of the US Heat Pump Summit) to explore the American heat pump market.

The US is predominantly air-to-air rather than air-to-water, yet the similarities are quite extraordinary... incorrectly sized systems, inadequate design, poor installer training, aggressive sales practices and homeowners left struggling when things go wrong.

See how many similarities you can spot. It turns out our two countries may be competing for the same rather unfortunate prize!

The Homeowners' Q&A podcast is back... I've changed the format and have decided to one-on-one. Here's the latest episode, focusing on overpromising and misleading heat pump claims.

https://youtu.be/VgSWtaYpKUQ

Topics covered:

→ The kW badge: why the number on the side of your heat pump is almost always a best-case figure measured at conditions that rarely exist in a British winter

→ "Your radiators will be fine": how zero and minimal disruption installs are creating a new generation of homeowners with rooms that never come to temperature

→ Buffer tanks: why they're still being slung in as standard, what they're actually costing you in efficiency and when they're genuinely needed versus when they're a sticking plaster for poor design

→ "Cheaper to run than gas": the electricity-to-gas price ratio and whether this claim can ever be made honestly

→ Warranties: why homeowners routinely don't know if they're covered for two years or ten... and whose fault that actually is

1) Mars I'm so sorry that your heat pump hit the skids - not fun - I hope it gets sorted (but yes, it's a bit ironic all things considered but it will be interesting to follow along - life as art);

2) I like the YouTube kitchen table chat format - it works really well, the subjects are well-considered and thoughtful. I really enjoyed the two episodes with Richard.

Nice one. 😊

We’re proud to share that the Homeowners’ Q&A podcast has won the Communications Award at the 2025 British Renewable Energy Awards hosted by the REA (Renewable Energy Association).

Now in its 20th year, the British Renewable Energy Awards are considered one of the highest honours in the renewables sector. This win is a significant milestone for us, not just because it recognises the podcast, but because it validates the mission we’ve been pursuing since episode one: helping UK homeowners navigate the often confusing world of renewable heating.

This award is for our brilliant podcast panelists, expert guests and most importantly, our viewers, followers and listeners... homeowners who are doing their best to understand new technology, avoid common pitfalls and make smarter choices.

In just over eight months, we’ve released 52+ episodes, welcomed more than 100 unique guests (and over 200 guest appearances in total) and racked up 185,000 combined views and listens, with over 40,000 hours of total watch and listen time. That engagement shows us just how important homeowner-facing content is, and how underserved this space has been.

We’d also like to thank our sponsors and supporters for helping us keep the show going. This podcast has always been about community and elevating the standard of information available to consumers.

Here’s to more honest conversations, more expert advice and a whole lot more myth-busting in the months ahead.
